What isPeriod Poverty?
Period Poverty
Period poverty is the lack of access to affordable menstrual products, clean sanitation, and education, often leading to health risks, missed school, work, and opportunities. It disproportionately affects low-income communities and is closely tied to gender inequality.
Over 500 million people worldwide experience period poverty.
Women and girls in low-income countries may spend up to 14% of their monthly income on menstrual products.
Many resort to using rags, leaves, cloth or newspaper in place of sanitary products due to their inaccessibility and high cost—leading to a higher risk of infections, reproductive health issues, and discomfort.
Numerous countries treat menstrual products as luxury goods, imposing taxes that make them even less affordable for low-income women and girls.
Lack of private toilets, clean water, and disposal facilities makes it difficult or unsafe for girls to manage their periods at school.
Many girls miss several days of school each month due to lack of menstrual products, adding up to significant learning loss over time. Absenteeism due to menstruation increases dropout rates.
